DuBOIS MANSION
1875-1978
The original DuBois family home was constructed in 1875 by John DuBois.
But, that is not the Mansion structure shown above that area people readily recognize and recall
for its Tudor architecture, its grand design, and for the lovely and spacious gardens
which beautified the property.
The original building ( shown below ) built by lumbering and business magnate John DuBois was remodeled in 1902
into a virtual country estate known locally as the "DuBois Mansion" by John Ezekial DuBois, nephew and
heir to the noted founder of DuBois who had passed away in 1886.
Following John E. DuBois’ death in 1934, the Mansion was vested with the DuBois Campus of
Penn State University and the DuBois Education Foundation.
Located on the present site of the Penn State DuBois campus, the grounds and formal garden area also
took in the current site of the DuBois Area High School.
The building was used for many years by the campus for classroom space and other uses.
However, the interior of the building was badly damaged by flooding resulting from a frozen water pipe which burst.
Efforts to raise money to restore the building were unsuccessful and in 1978 the DuBois Mansion was demolished.
All that remains today are the cut stone pillars ( shown above ) that marked the its entrance way.
